The strawberries have looked a bit sad (weak, small plants with many dead leaves) for most of the last eighteen months – it looked as if they may be missing some vital nutrient. What though, seemed a mystery – they have always had been feed and watered.
Some of plants perked up over the summer so I let them put out runners and filled in the gaps on the specialist strawberry container that they’re grown in. Then, this winter, the plants either died off or fell apart literally – seemingly healthy, complete stems and leaves left on the surface of the soil.
Down to two plants (out of twenty-eight) so serious investigations began – vine weevil. The pot is riddled with them and sadly it look as if they rather enjoyed the strawberry roots.
I haven’t had the (dis)pleasure of these little critters in the garden before.
Actions taken so far:
- Strawberry soil was immediately quarantined, other pots to be investigated.
- Nematodes have been ordered. I have a lot of plants in pots and many are fruit so chemicals are not an option.
- Nematodes to be watered in – apparently they are lifed (ie have an expiry date) so you need to deal with them fairly urgently but the soil temperature should to be above five degrees celcius for them to survive.
- Keep them in a fridge until you want to use them.
- Soil to be kept watered for at least a fortnight after you have applied them.
With actions planned:
- Evening “bug watch” planned over the summer (I should get out more!) – the adult beetle is most active at night.
- Possibly try to put some barrier glue or tape around the pots – the beetle can’t fly so this will hopefully stop them getting on to other plants.
- Second dousing of nematodes planned for late August/Sept.
Plants the vine weevil likes (probably not a the whole list but if you have any of these keep an eye on them):
- The grub eats a wide range of plants including: bergenias, cyclamen, fuchsias, heuchera, polyanthus, primulas, sedums and strawberries
- The beetle eats: bergenias, camellias, euonymus, and rhododendrons.
(Note: Plants in containers are particularly susceptible – both indoors, in the greenhouse and outside.)
