Gardening Jobs for September
- More jams, chutneys, pickles and preserving – freezing, drying, etc (especially blackberries and apples!)
- Place bricks under pumpkins and remove any leaves shading the pumpkins
- Cut leaves/stems (haulms) off main crop, leave a couple weeks and harvest. Dry thoroughly before storing in hessian sacks somewhere cool and dark.
- Cut bean plants at ground level and leave roots to rot
- Sow green manure
- Divide established perennials and plant (or sow) new perennials eg delphiniums, ammi majus and sow hardy annuals eg calendula
- Pot some mint roots to keep in the kitchen over the winter
- Continue to plan next year’s garden. Order and plant spring-flowering bulbs and new trees/shrubs, if available now
- Prune late-flowering shrubs and keep dead-heading
- Buy and water in nematodes (vine weevil prevention!)
- Mow, scarify, aerate and re-seed lawn
- Start the autumn tidy up – raise pots on to feet, clear pond weed, kill weeds…!
