Gardening Jobs for August
- Keep feeding tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers
- Pinch out tops runner bean and tomato plants (and side shoots of tomatoes) Remove some leaves from lower 1/3 of tomato plants to help prevent blight
- Keep harvesting (eg beans, courgettes and cucumbers) to encourage the plants producing
- Harvest main crop potatoes
- Cut back lavender and prune summer flowering shrubs once they’re over
- Cut back herbs such as fennel, lovage and mint to encourage re-growth – keep drying and freezing the herbs
- Collect herb and other seeds once they have dried
- Take more cuttings – shrubs and perennials eg fuchsias
- Plant strawberry runners for continuity/to fill any spaces in the bed
- Cut out raspberry and loganberry canes which have fruited and tie in the new canes
- Be on the look out for cabbage white caterpillars and “deal with them”
- Photograph the garden and make notes on what has/hasn’t worked, what you might like to try next year
- Start ordering spring bulbs
- Watering (especially planters and pots), weeding and dead-heading
