Gardening Jobs for May
- Continue thinning out, potting on or planting out flowers and veg grown from seed. Harden off outdoor plants – be frost aware!
- Apply shade paint to the greenhouse and cold-frames to avoid “cooking” any little plants
- Take cuttings of perennials – Fuchsia, geraniums and shrubby herbs
- Cut back some early flowering shrubs eg choisya
- Pinch out the growing points of broad beans, build the runner bean wigwams and continue earthing-up potatoes
- Plant out brassicas and leeks
- Late May – empty beds and borders ready for summer bedding plants
- Sort out containers: top-dress and feed/water
- Bug patrol and weed control – watch out for pests (and diseases) such as lily beetles
- Weed and feed the lawn
